Upon your arrival in Tokyo, we highly recommend making use of the incredible train system that Japan has to offer. It’s not only convenient but also an essential part of the Tokyo experience. If you plan on traveling to more than two cities in Japan, consider getting a Japan Rail Pass, which you must obtain before arriving in Japan. Alternatively, the Suica Pass is a great option for getting around Tokyo. These passes provide convenient and cost-effective transportation options.

As you ride the trains, you’ll notice how remarkably quiet everyone is, creating a serene atmosphere. If you’re traveling with kids, you might need to gently convince them to keep the noise down. We even jokingly told our kids that making noise could land them in jail, which miraculously transformed them into well-behaved passengers.

2. Stroll Down Takashida Street

Takashida Street, located in downtown Tokyo, is a narrow thoroughfare famous for its diverse range of shops, boutiques, cafes, and fast-food outlets. During our visit, we encountered a ramen house where you place your order using a machine, a novel experience for us. While there was some initial confusion about who was in line first, we quickly adapted and enjoyed our meal.

This vibrant street has something for everyone, from rainbow candy floss to owl cafes. It’s a paradise for families, offering a plethora of fun activities and delicious treats.

3. Explore the Museum of Science and Technology

If you’re interested in gaining insight into the latest scientific advancements, a visit to the Museum of Science and Technology in Tokyo is a must. This museum, created by the Japan Science and Technology Agency, offers a fascinating look into contemporary scientific discoveries.

During our visit, we were particularly captivated by a robot capable of running and playing soccer. It was a thrilling encounter, especially for the kids. Plan to spend a full day at this museum, as it’s surrounded by numerous other attractions and shopping opportunities.

4. Witness the Shibuya Crossing

A trip to Tokyo would be incomplete without experiencing the famous Shibuya Crossing. Known as the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world, it’s a mesmerizing sight to behold. When the traffic lights turn red, it triggers a massive scramble as pedestrians flood into the intersection from all directions. With up to 3,000 people crossing simultaneously, it’s an unforgettable spectacle.

5. Dine at Themed Restaurants

Tokyo boasts a wide array of themed restaurants, each offering a unique and entertaining dining experience. Consider visiting the Robot Restaurant or, during our visit, we enjoyed the Kawaii Monster Cafe. The latter is a dinner theater featuring colorful dishes and performers dressed in eccentric outfits, creating a fun and slightly surreal dining atmosphere.

While the Kawaii Monster Cafe has sadly closed, Tokyo continuously evolves with new cultural trends, so you’re sure to find other themed restaurants to enjoy.

6. Visit the Meiji Shrine

The Meiji Shrine is a place of tranquility and spiritual significance in the heart of Tokyo. Dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his consorts, this shrine offers a glimpse into Japan’s rich history and culture. Before entering, visitors are encouraged to purify themselves by washing their hands and mouth at a stone basin, a customary ritual.

The shrine’s spacious grounds are perfect for a leisurely stroll, and you’ll encounter a massive torii gate at the entrance. Bowing upon entering and leaving the shrine is a sign of respect to the deities. The Meiji Shrine is one of Japan’s most popular shrines, making it a must-visit attraction.

7. Savor Local Cuisine

Tokyo is a culinary paradise, and you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to local cuisine. From delectable ramen to fresh sushi, the city offers a wide range of culinary delights. During our stay, we stumbled upon a small sushi shop near our accommodation, where we enjoyed authentic sushi that we still dream about.

Don’t hesitate to explore restaurants off the beaten path, as some of the most memorable dining experiences can be found in these hidden gems. Trying local food is an integral part of immersing yourself in Tokyo’s culture.

8. Stay in a Traditional Japanese House

For a truly immersive experience, consider staying in a traditional Japanese house, which can be arranged through Airbnb. This accommodation choice provides a unique opportunity to live like a local and gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. Tokyo’s neighborhoods are home to fascinating restaurants and street markets, making your stay in a residential area all the more rewarding.
